Dear IESO friends,

Welcome to Taipei for the Opening Ceremony of the Third International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO 2009)!

With the participation of 15 student teams (from countries such as Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Nepal, Nigeria, Philippines, Singapore, Sir Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, UK, and USA) and 3 observing teams (from countries such as Argentina, France, and Ukraine), this year has become the biggest IESO event ever! We hope that the number of participating countries will double for the next IESO 2010 in Indonesia.

The IESO activities, including International Team Field Investigation (ITFI) and cultural presentations by the participating students, have made IESO a one of a kind event. New activities such as the Geosphere Field-Trip Practical Test on Sep.18th and the Rock Knowledge Assembly (RKA) on Sep.19th, will add to the uniqueness of IESO 2009. The IESO 2009 song and the student performance show at the farewell dinner will be another highlight of IESO this year.

We look forward to your enthusiastic participation of all the exciting activities planned by our staff at IESO 2009. I hope you have a wonderful time in Taiwan!

With great excitement, the IESO 2009 has finally started on the 14th of September, 2009. A total of 105 delegates, consisting of 23 mentors, 23 observers and 7 guests from 17 various countries have arrived to Taiwan to participate this exciting event....

Welcome Dinner and Ice Breaker Party

“Welcome to Taiwan,” a cheerful and joyful voice said from the Chair of the IESO local organizing committee, Prof. Chun-Yen Chang, at the Holiday Inn in Taipei. Over 100 delegates, including students, mentors, observers and guests of honor, from 17 countries all over the world attended the 2009 IESO Welcome Dinner and Ice Breaker Party.

Moderation and Visit & Tour

Before the final award distribution, mentors are given the opportunity to make adjustments in students’ test scores, should there be any questions or concerns in grading. Therefore, moderations were held at 9 a.m. in four separate rooms of the hotel by the different areas in Earth Science: Atmosphere, Astronomy, Geosphere and Hydrosphere. During the process of moderations, the members of the Scientific Committee helped solve questions and settled doubts concerning the test results. The discussions went peacefully and all the moderations were completed within three hours....

Jury Meetings

In the evening, the last two meetings of the IESO 2009 (Jury Meetings 4 & 5) were held. During the 4th meeting, the final distributions of all the medals were decided. Finally, during the 5th meeting, suggestions were given on how the statutes of IESO can be improved in order to help the subsequent host countries organize a better and more successful IESO....
