Moderation
Before the final award distribution, mentors are given the opportunity to make adjustments in students’ test scores, should there be any questions or concerns in grading. Therefore, moderations were held at 9 a.m. in four separate rooms of the hotel by the different areas in Earth Science: Atmosphere, Astronomy, Geosphere and Hydrosphere. During the process of moderations, the members of the Scientific Committee helped solve questions and settled doubts concerning the test results. The discussions went peacefully and all the moderations were completed within three hours.
While the moderations were still taking place, some mentors, observers and guests who didn’t have to attend the meeting visited the Yehliu Geology Park, a famous park with rich ecological resources located at Wanli of Taipei County. Starting with watching a video clip about Ye Liu, guests then moved forward to see the seawater-eroded holes and numerous animal-like rocks in the shapes such as elephant, fish, and turtle. The mushroom rocks have attracted the attention of most tourists and among which is the landmark of Yehliu, the very famous Queen’s Head. Looking from a particular angle with some imaginations, the rock indeed shapes like a Queen’s Head. Unfortunately, due to the long queue, no pictures were taken with it.
In the evening, the last two meetings of the IESO 2009 (Jury Meetings 4 & 5) were held. In order to maintain the fairness and confidentiality, only those countries with students participating in the IESO 2009 (not including Argentina, France & Ukraine) were invited to attend the 4th meeting in which the final distributions of all the medals were decided. Then, in the 5th meeting, all mentors, observers and guests of the IESO 2009 joined to discuss about how the statutes of IESO can be improved to make it more thorough in order to help the subsequent host countries, i.e. Indonesia, organize a better and more successful IESO. |

ITFI Presentation & Keynote Speech
The ITFI group presentations, designed to expand participants’ understanding of earthquakes, and keynote Speech were held on Sunday afternoon at Gung-Guan campus, NTNU.
Students have stayed up late to prepare for group presentations the night before and took some more time on Sunday morning to work on the computers to synthesize what they have observed, measured, and analyzed in the field into final group reports. Also, each group had to organize slides in front of the ITFI judges and all the IESO participants. In order to achieve the best result, all students have shown great cooperation in their team work.
Followed by students’ preparation work was a keynote speech presented by Mr. Seiya Uyeda, an outstanding Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo and a member of Japan Academy. Both the mentors and students were utterly absorbed in the speech. Indeed, his speech highlighted the importance of Earth Science and gave a brand-new learning experience and inspiration to the students.
Finally, students’ group presentations were conducted on the stage after the keynote speech. With creative and innovative ideas, students had outstanding performances in their presentations. |
