Practical Test MentorStudentObserver
01The IESO 2009 Practical Test took place in a gloomy and cloudy morning on Gung-Guan campus, NTNU. Students woke up in the early morning feeling heavy-hearted for the upcoming practical and field trip tests. Some of them stayed up studying until midnight to make sure that they are fully prepared for the tests. During the practical test, students were tested on how to operate an astronomical telescope and to observe and explain assigned astronomical phenomena on the auditorium. Also, they were given related data charts for atmospheric interpretation and analysis on the track and field.

01Having completed the practical test, students had two hours break on the buses before the next field trip test in the Northeast coast. They were split up into 6 groups to carry on their test when the buses finally stopped in a spectacular landform “Long Dong Ocean Park,” which is one of the most popular sightseeing spots for the tourists in Taipei County.

Putting on a camouflage hat, vest and backpack, pupils walked on the rugged rock in the several stops that had already been previously set up for them to work on. In the mean time, students were asked to conduct survey works such as sketching the topography, observing the sedimentary structures, classifying the rocks consisted in the strata, identifying the fossils observed, and measuring the strike and dip of the strata. In addition, by using a GPS receiver, students had to label their locations on a map, to sum up their interpretations and to reconstruct the geological history of the field site survey.

After two and a half hours of hard work, all students were hot, sweaty and exhausted. Yet, they enjoyed the relief of finishing their tests as well as the stunning view, “wow, it is my first time to see the ocean”, “we don’t have this kind of geologic landform in our country”, “I’m tired after having tests all day, but still feel happy staying here,” students whispered.

Sightseeing in Yilan countyMentorObserverGuest

01In the morning when all the mentors and the staffs assembled in the lobby of the hotel, a wonderful day of sightseeing in Yilan county was about to begin. The first destination was the King Car Distillery, which was the pioneer as well as the one and the only whisky manufacturer in Taiwan. There at the King Car distillery, the mentors learned the process of how Kavalan is fermented, distilled and mashed. The best part of this visit was the opportunity to taste the latest whisky in the restaurant for free.

The next destination, National Center for Traditional Arts, was an ideal place for foreign friends to learn about the Chinese culture. The mentors and observers arrived at the center right on time for a show which gave them a better understanding of the traditional Taiwanese folk arts. During lunch time, since there was a great variety of authentic Chinese food, the Organizing Committee provided 500 NTD for everyone, so that they could have a choice of their own for lunch. Also, many mentors and observers bought souvenirs to bring back home from a diversity of shops, which carries fine quality of traditional Taiwanese handcrafts, clothes and desserts, in order to be reminded of their unique travelling and learning experiences in Taiwan.
