New Influenza A (H1N1)

As H1N1 virus has spread around the world rapidly, below general measures will be set for the upcoming 2009 International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) in order to reduce the risk of H1N1 spreading.

Currently, evidence suggests that the new Influenza A (H1N1) virus can be  transmitted as easily as the normal seasonal flu and can be passed to other people by exposure to infected droplets expelled by coughing or sneezing that can be inhaled, or that can be contaminate hands or surfaces.

Signs of Influenza A (H1N1) are flu-like, including fever, cough, headache, body aches, sore throat and runny nose, and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea.

  • Forehead temperature will be taken and recorded twice a day (reference to ear temperature of 38 degree Celcius/100.4 degree Fahrenheit).
  • Any individual displaying high temperatures or above flu-like signs should inform IESO staff right away.  A mask will be given to such individual to wear and will be taken to the hospital for further check-up.
  • Upon releasing from the hospital, medicine will be prescribed for the individual to take.  The individual will be moved to a single room to conduct self-health management following local public health recommendations.
  • When coughing or sneezing, please cover mouth and nose with tissues or other suitable materials.
  • Pay attention to personal hygiene.  Please wash hands frequently with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand rub/hand sanitizer, especially if touching the mouth and nose and surfaces that are potentially contaminated.
  • Stay in close contact with the local public health unit in order to respond appropriately when an outbreak occurs.

Proper use and disposal of masks is essential.

  • Place mask carefully to cover mouth and nose and tie securely to minimize any gaps between the face and the mask
  • While in use, avoid touching the mask.  If touching a used mask, please wash hands with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Once the mask becomes damp and humid, please replace with a new, clean, dry mask as soon as possible.
  • If the masks are single-use masks, please do not re-use them and dispose them immediately upon removing.

Welcome / Ice Breaker Party Video Clip deadline & Guidline

The IESO 2009 is going to take place within one month.  The aims of this international event are not only to pursue individual achievements in earth science but also to promote collaboration between people from different countries in order to figure out how to live in harmony with our Earth.  However, before cooperation, every participant of each country’s delegation must, at least, get a chance to know each other well.  Here comes the Ice Breaker Party.  At this party, the organizing committee is planning to play videos (preferable) or PowerPoint files which every country’ delegation should provide in advance.

Requirements for the video or PowerPoint file:

  • The content of the video clip or PowerPoint file should mainly be each delegate’s self-introduction, for instance, what is your name, where are you from, what are your hobbies…etc, but it can also roughly present the uniqueness of your country or culture.
  • The length of the video clip or PowerPoint file should be 3 minutes as minimum, but not longer than 5 minutes.
  • To use Mpeg-2 as your video format is strongly recommended.

And the organizing committee has set up a server for your video or PowerPoint file.

How to upload your video clip or PowerPoint file to our FTP server:

  • Download and install the FTP software. (Ex: FileZilla)
  • Run the application program
  • Enter IP, Port, username and password into the four blanks above on the screen respectively. ( IP: 140.122.147.97; PORT: 21)
  • Upload your file to FTP server.
  • Inform us by e-mail after the file is uploaded.

The organizing committee has provided a simple video demonstration for your reference.  Click here for downloading the video.  Try to make the video as interesting as possible in order to make an unforgettable impression on all the participants.  Please be noted that your video or PowerPoint file must be uploaded before September, 5th, 2009.  As for those who are going to join this event as observers, each team should prepare 2-minute self-introduction on the stage at the Ice Breaker Party.  All in all, the organizing committee is looking forward to your vivid video clip.  Let’s break the ice and know each other better!

Concern on Recent Devastation of Typhoon Marakot in Taiwan

Dear IESO participants,

Due to the recent devastation of Typhoon Marakot in Southern Taiwan, there have been many concerns from the international community regarding Taiwan’s situation.  Typhoon Marakot ravaged Southern Taiwan with flooding and landslides, but most affected areas are in remote parts of Southern Taiwan.  Other areas are not affected, domestic and international flights are operating as usual.  As 2009 IESO and its related events will be held in Taipei, which is in Northern Taiwan, IESO will be carried out as scheduled from September 14th~22nd.

We would like to thank you for all your warm concerns and support, and we look forward for another year of successful event.

Sincerely yours,

Chun-Yen Chang, Ph.D.
